Finland unveils 33rd Ukraine aid package worth €128 million

Finland will send Ukraine a new military assistance package valued at approximately €128 million ($138 million), its 33rd tranche of defence materiel since Russia’s full-scale invasion, the Finnish government said on May 29th.

Details of the equipment, delivery schedule and methods remain undisclosed for security reasons, a standard practice in such transfers to avoid aiding Russian targeting.

The latest contribution brings Finland’s total military support to Ukraine to around €3.4 billion since the start of the war in 2022, one of the highest per-capita contributions among Western donors.

“Strong, timely support is what strengthens our resilience,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in response to the announcement.

President Alexander Stubb approved the package on May 29th following a proposal from the government, according to the Ministry of Defence. The aid reflects both Ukraine’s urgent battlefield requirements and the need to maintain Finland’s own defence capabilities, officials said.

Finland, which shares a long border with Russia and joined NATO in 2023, has consistently positioned its support for Ukraine as essential to European security. Helsinki has repeatedly stressed that Russian aggression must not go unchecked, aligning its policy with other Nordic and Baltic states.

The new package follows an earlier €98 million tranche announced in January 2026. Finnish aid has included a wide range of equipment, from artillery ammunition and armoured vehicles to anti-tank weapons and training support, though specific items in individual packages are rarely detailed publicly.

The decision comes amid ongoing Russian pressure on Ukrainian front lines, particularly in eastern regions, where Kyiv has reported shortages in air defence and artillery munitions.

Finland’s sustained backing underscores a broader shift in its post-Cold War security posture. After decades of military non-alignment, the Nordic country has become one of Ukraine’s most reliable partners, contributing both bilaterally and through EU and NATO frameworks.

The aid is financed from Finland’s existing defence budget allocations for Ukraine support. Officials said the package was calibrated to avoid depleting critical domestic stocks.

As the war enters its fifth year, donor fatigue has emerged as a concern in some Western capitals. Finland’s announcement signals continued resolve among frontline European states to maintain pressure on Moscow through military assistance.
